Our investment in the future

At npower we take environmental sustainability seriously and have a target to reduce our carbon emissions by 25% by 2020 (against a 2015 baseline). Our focus is ensuring that every part of our business is as energy efficient as it can possibly be; we are always looking for new ways to reduce our environmental impact and that of our customers.

Our environmental efforts have been recognised with a number of awards and we are the only energy company to have achieved triple certification from the Carbon Trust. This international environmental award recognises the achievements we have made in reducing carbon emissions, water use and increasing recycling.

Employee involvement

Our ‘green-spirited’ employees get involved with many of our sustainability schemes and always go the extra mile to do their bit for the environment. Our EASY campaign (Environment, Action, Sustainability and You) continues to be very popular, with our employees getting involved with “no travel weeks”, our “Printless” campaign, and doing simple things like recycling. This helped us to really reduce our business travel as well as the amount of waste we send to landfill.

See what they say:

Rhiannon Hughes, Digital Transformation Lead: “I’m proud to work for an organisation that takes sustainability in the workplace seriously. It’s fantastic that we were awarded the triple standard from the Carbon Trust and that we were the first energy company to achieve this, showing our customers that we really are practising what we preach."

I ran a competition for internal employees and external students where they created their own environmentally-friendly projects, which had support from the business and many fellow employees. It was great to see the ideas come to life, for example we now have low-energy usage hand-dryers in the toilets thanks to one team and a wildflower meadow is being created outside the Durham office thanks to another! The teams externally also have had a great impact on their communities which has been lovely to see.
